Matrilineal Narratives of Incarceration and Deportation
with SAEDi Collective
SAEDi Collective Associate Director Julivic Marquez directed the educational film, ¿A dónde vas los sueños?. Filling a need for materials on incarceration accessible to Spanish speakers, the film features women in a Dominican family navigating the incarceration of their loved ones. Their son and brother is detained during filming, due to his past conviction, leading the women to reflect on the ways carceral webs and the deportation pipeline act together to ensnare immigrants–undocumented and documented alike. Filmed against the lush backdrop of a botanical greenhouse, the women reflect on their relationship to home, the land, migration, and matrilineal caregiving across borders and generations. ¿A dónde van los sueños? premiered in March 2025 at the Latine Groundings and Explorations Mini-Conference held at Wellesley.
