Youth Reimagining Communities
with Families for Justice as Healing
Families for Justice as Healing’s (FJAH) model of intergenerational organizing includes hiring youth organizers in the summer. This seed grant enabled FJAH to continue its youth summer program in 2024 and supported FJAH’s Director of Reimagining Communities, Sashi James, in refining her intergenerational mentoring model that reflects FJAH’s abolitionist principles. High school and college students helped lead Reimagining Communities initiatives, including FJAH’s Community Love Fund Pantry, hydroponic farm, and annual summer FreeHer cookout. As an outgrowth of the summer, James created the role of Community Shifters at FJAH, hiring young women to meet basic needs, build trust, and shift power in communities impacted by policing and incarceration in Roxbury, MA.
